Shopify or WooCommerce: how to choose for a small team

Both are sound platforms for a small store. The choice turns on two questions: who runs the store each day, and who looks after it.

On this page

Choose Shopify if your team wants to run the store without a developer, within Shopify's apps and settings. Choose WooCommerce if the store must sit inside a WordPress site you control, and someone will own its hosting, updates and security.

Shopify is a hosted commerce platform: you pay for a plan, and hosting is included. WooCommerce is a free, open-source plugin by Automattic that adds a store to a WordPress site. Open source here means you can inspect and change any part of its code, and you supply and maintain the hosting.

We build online stores as part of our e-commerce website development work. We're a Shopify Partner and build stores on Shopify, so weigh our view with that in mind. We checked each platform fact below against the provider's own documentation on 25 Oct 2026.

For a small business, choose by who runs and maintains the store

The choice is a trade between upkeep and control. Shopify takes on hosting and upkeep, and you work within its settings, while WooCommerce gives you the code, the host and the upkeep.

Shopify or WooCommerce: a rule for each situation
If this is trueThen
Your team will run the store without a developer, and nobody wants to look after hosting or updatesShopify. Hosting and platform updates are part of the plan. You work within its themes, apps and settings, and still check those after changes.
You already have a WordPress site you control, it publishes often, and someone already maintains itWooCommerce, inside that site. The person who keeps WordPress updated keeps the store updated too.
You want to choose your own host or change any part of the code, and you can name the person who will maintain itWooCommerce, with that person named in writing before launch.
Your products, pricing or order workflow follow many rules of their ownA scoped look at both, or a custom build. Write the rules down first, then test each platform against them.
Leave it aloneYour current store works, sells, and someone looks after itStay where you are. Moving a store is real work that puts orders and search visibility at risk. Revisit it when something real stops you: a feature you can't add, a payment method you can't offer, or upkeep nobody owns.

The difference between Shopify and WooCommerce, side by side

The main difference is who runs the technology: Shopify runs its own platform, while a WooCommerce store's host and upkeep are yours. The table shows what that means after launch.

What a "free" WooCommerce store still needs

A WooCommerce store still needs hosting, updates, backups and security, even though the plugin is free. None of the four rules WooCommerce out, but each needs an owner.

  • Hosting. You choose a host and pay for it. It should meet WooCommerce's server recommendations for WordPress, PHP, the database, memory and HTTPS. Add a domain if you don't have one.
  • Updates. WordPress applies minor and security releases automatically on most sites, and major releases can also be automatic, depending on the installation and settings. Check what your site actually does. Automatic updates for plugins and themes are opt-in: an administrator has to turn them on.
  • Backups. WordPress's own guide says a backup has two parts, the database and the files, and you need both to restore a site. It suggests daily backups for busy sites, and a backup before every upgrade.
  • Security. WordPress's hardening guide says older versions are not maintained with security updates. It also says hosts are not responsible for the application you choose to install. The store's security is yours.

Put a name next to each of the four, or updates wait and an old version stops getting security fixes. If you are still weighing WordPress itself, see WordPress or a custom-built website.

What Shopify takes on, and what it leaves to you

Shopify takes on the hosting and the platform's security, while the apps, theme updates and its limits stay with you. Its India pricing page says hosting is included, every plan has a free SSL certificate, and Shopify is certified Level 1 PCI DSS compliant. PCI DSS is the card industry's baseline of security requirements for protecting payment account data.

  • Apps. Most apps come from outside developers, and Shopify says to contact the developer for help with one. Each app is one more thing to check after a change.
  • Theme updates. Shopify's automated theme updates only fix bugs and security issues, and only themes from the Shopify Theme Store get updates. New features need you to add the new version, and code edits carry over only when they don't conflict with it.
  • The platform's limits. You work within Shopify's settings. Theme code uses Liquid, and Shopify suggests editing it only if you know HTML and CSS and some Liquid. Shopify describes deeper checkout customisation, through its branding API and extensions, as part of the Shopify Plus plan.

For a team without a developer, that trade is usually the point. Staff account limits depend on the plan, so count who needs to log in first.

How payments work for a store in India

On both platforms, an Indian store takes payments through a third-party gateway such as Razorpay or PayU, because neither platform's own payment service is offered in India. A payment gateway is the service that takes the customer's payment and passes it on to your account.

On Shopify

Shopify Payments isn't offered in India, so you connect a provider's Shopify app. Shopify then adds its own third-party transaction fee, except on manual methods such as cash on delivery. Our guide to Shopify with UPI, cash on delivery and GST covers the providers, that fee, selling abroad and the settings.

On WooCommerce

WooPayments, WooCommerce's own payment service, is not offered in India either, so you install a gateway plugin instead. Razorpay publishes an official plugin for WooCommerce for cards, netbanking, wallets and UPI. PayU has one too.

Cash on delivery is part of the free core plugin. You turn it on under WooCommerce, Settings, Payments, Take offline payments. Orders paid this way stay at Processing until the payment is collected.

On either platform, ask the gateway three things: which methods it supports, how refunds work, and whether it takes payments from abroad.

What you can take with you if you move later

Both platforms let you export your data, in different ways. On Shopify, you can export products, customers and orders as CSV files from the admin. A CSV file is a plain spreadsheet file that most tools can open. Product images are not in the product file, so keep your originals.

On WooCommerce, the data lives in your own database on your host. WooCommerce's listing says you retain ownership of your store's content and data. Products export to CSV with the built-in exporter, and a full backup holds the database and the files.

Moving platforms later is a migration, with data carried across and old addresses redirected. Our website migration checklist lists what any move must keep. On either platform, keep the domain, store and gateway accounts in your business's name (why that matters).

Our position

For most stores, we recommend Shopify: it's reliable, and your team can run it without a developer. WooCommerce has real strengths: open code, a host you choose, data in your own database, and all of WordPress for content. If those matter more to you than not running servers, WooCommerce fits, and we'll say so.

We don't build new WooCommerce stores ourselves, but we do move WooCommerce stores to Shopify. Some stores fit neither platform, because their products, pricing or workflow need something a platform can't do. We work that out with you in Discovery & Scope rather than guess. If you are earlier than this, start with what to settle before you launch your first online store.

Questions to answer before you choose

Answer these before you compare plans; rough notes are fine.

Bring this to the call

  • Where you sell today, and whether a WordPress site is already part of it.
  • Who will run the store each day, and who will look after updates, backups and hosting.
  • How your customers pay: UPI, cards, cash on delivery, and whether any pay from abroad.
  • Your product list with variants, and any pricing or order rules that are unusual.
  • The tools the store must connect to, such as accounting, stock, email and WhatsApp.
  • Who holds each account today: domain, hosting, store admin and payment gateway.

Next step: write your answers down and tell us about the store. We'll reply within 24 hours with questions or a time for a call, and a written quote follows.

Questions

What is the difference between Shopify and WooCommerce?

Who runs the technology. Shopify hosts and maintains the platform; with WooCommerce, the hosting, updates, backups and security are yours. The side-by-side table above covers the rest.

Which is better, Shopify or WooCommerce?

Neither, in general: it depends on who runs and maintains the store. The decision rules near the start of this guide match it to your situation.

Does Shopify Payments work in India?

No, so Indian stores connect a gateway such as Razorpay or PayU, and Shopify adds its own fee. Our Shopify in India guide covers the fee, cash on delivery and GST.

Can I switch from one to the other later?

Yes, but it is a migration, not a setting: data is exported and imported, and every old address needs a redirect. Product images need their originals kept separately on Shopify.
